Conradie Park: A Modern Oasis of Sustainable Living and Skilled Craftsmanship

Nestled conveniently near major arterial roads in Pinelands, Cape Town, Conradie Park is a groundbreaking mixed-income, mixed-use housing development that seamlessly blends functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability. This 22-hectare venture stands as a testament to innovation in housing design and community development.

Sustainable Excellence in Architecture

At the heart of Conradie Park’s architectural innovation lies a commitment to sustainability, exemplified by the extensive use of ceramic clay brick. This durable material, known for its resistance to fading, rotting, chipping, and rusting, ensures low-maintenance living for the residents of more than 3,500 homes within the development.

Mark Schonrock, the property development manager at Concor, highlights the intentional use of different colours and shapes of face brick to create texture and variety in the façade. These natural masonry walls not only add character and texture to contemporary materials like cement but also play with sculptural light and shadow as the natural light changes throughout the day.

A perforated design in the brick walls in front of drying yards serves a dual purpose, allowing light and air to pass through while adding an attractive texture to the building façade. The intricate laying of face bricks is entrusted to experienced artisans, emphasising the attention to detail in the construction process.

Acoustic Excellence for Community Living

Beyond aesthetics and sustainability, Conradie Park’s architectural choices contribute to the well-being of its community. The density and mass of ceramic clay bricks, used throughout the development, serve as natural sound barriers, providing high acoustic protection, making them ideal for schools and community buildings.

Investing in Skills Development

Conradie Park’s development team recognises the importance of fostering local skills in bricklaying. Mark Schonrock notes that while Cape Town still boasts a good pool of bricklaying skills, the effects of a prolonged period of depressed conditions in the sector are anticipated in the future. In response, Conradie Park serves as a hub for skills development.

As part of its corporate commitment to skills enhancement, Concor conducts bricklaying skills training on-site. Through the National Youth Service programme, six local bricklayer learners were trained, starting their course in November 2020. Upon completing the six-month training, these graduates were seamlessly integrated into the workforce, contributing their newly acquired skills to the ongoing success of the Conradie Park project.
